Freelance Editing
As an author and publisher, I know first-hand the importance of editing. My experience includes the prose and poetry collection, Paul Bunyan Wears a Face Mask as well as fiction and nonfiction books by independent authors. I’ve also served as associate editor for an award-winning magazine, the sole editor for major public-facing corporate reports, and the last line of defense against typos on websites and blogs.

– Emma G Rose
Contract-Based Publishing Support
You don’t have to navigate the path to self-publishing alone. I’ve walked that way before (several times!). Let me point out potential pitfalls and help you publish a professional-looking book.
Mix and match the services you need:
- interior layout services
- blurb writing
- author bio writing
- style-book creation
- publication planning
- marketing templates
- consulting
These services are offered on a contract basis. You retain copyright and publishing rights to your work unless explicitly agreed upon in a contract signed by both parties.
FAQs
Who will edit my work?
All editing is done in-house by me, a professional content writer, editor and publisher. I have a BA in Journalism and more than 15 years of experience across all kinds of writing and publishing. If I bring in anyone else to look at your work, I will let you know before the work is shared with them.
Do you use AI?
No. I edit without relying on AI tools. I will never feed your writing into an AI client, and I will always provide my real, human feedback informed by research and decades of experience.
How do you make editing decisions?
I rely on The Chicago Manual of Style, Merriam-Webster Online, and the AP Stylebook for most editorial projects. If you have an in-house or series-specific style guide, I will follow those first. If you need one of these custom style guides, I can help with that as well.
Will you publish my book for me?
Imperative Press Books is exploring potential publishing projects, but we are extremely selective. Publishing is a huge investment of time and money, and as a micro-press, we can only make that commitment for books we’re absolutely in love with. However, I do offer my experience to guide authors through the process of self-publishing, and provide services to make that faster, easier, and less stressful. (See the Contract-Based Publishing Support) section above.
How much do your services cost?
Pricing is heavily dependent on the scope and size of your project. I’ve worked with self-published authors, institutions of higher ed, book publishers, and corporate clients so there’s no one-size-fits all price list I can share. Tell me about your project and I’ll give you a quote.
Can’t I save money by just editing my book myself?
If your budget is tight self-editing might be your only option. There’s no shame in that. But self-editing is notoriously difficult. It’s hard to spot errors in words you know so well. (I don’t even edit my own work for this reason!) When you pay for editing, you get a impartial reader with better than average knowledge of the conventions of the English language.
